FIND THE PEOPLE AND PLACES THAT BRING OUT YOUR BEST
Even the strongest willpower eventually runs out. Achievement is never just about individual effort; it also depends on your environment. Instead of continually forcing yourself against the current, improve your situation: choose the right places, peers, mentors, and culture to make it easier to bring out your best.
Chapter 1
LOOK BEYOND GRIT
Talent and effort matter, but neither operates alone. The people, places, mentors, and cultures surrounding us can amplify our effort or diminish it. Achievement depends on both person and situation.
Chapter 2
CHANGE THE SITUATION FIRST
Instead of relying on willpower to change your behavior, intervene earlier. Change your situation and you can influence the thoughts that follow, making the behavior you want considerably easier to achieve.
Chapter 3
FIND YOUR OPTIMAL SITUATION
Personality has range. Different circumstances activate different versions of you. Identify the people and places that consistently bring out your best, then deliberately move toward situations where that person emerges.
Chapter 4
SET UP YOUR SPACE
Your physical surroundings continually influence your behavior. Arrange your environment so desirable actions become easier and unwanted behaviors become harder. Stop fighting temptation when you can remove it instead.
Chapter 5
PICK YOUR PEERS
The people around you influence what seems normal, desirable, and achievable. Choose peers who reinforce your aspirations, raise your standards, encourage your effort, and help you become your better self.
Chapter 6
ATTRACT GREAT MENTORS
Don’t wait passively for a mentor to discover you. Seek people who can teach, challenge, encourage, and connect you, then make yourself the kind of person talented mentors want to help.
Chapter 7
CHOOSE YOUR CULTURE
Culture quietly establishes how people behave. Find or create environments where the attitudes, standards, and behaviors required for success are normal, supported, expected, and reinforced by everyone around you.
Chapter 8
CREATE BETTER SITUATIONS FOR OTHERS
Situational awareness creates situational responsibility. Parents, leaders, and citizens shape environments for others. Instead of simply demanding better behavior, create circumstances that make it easier for people to become their best.

Your environment can either work for you or against you. Use this 10-point scorecard to see how well your surroundings support the person you want to become.
